Rome Is Beautiful

An important capital city such as Rome could only be well served in terms of transportation, and especially with regards to Airports. This is a factor which also makes it appealing for tourists, allowing travellers from all parts of Europe and the world to get to the city without experiencing many problems. It is fundamental, without question, to have a variety of efficient air routes which link up the Italian capital with other large cities on the peninsula, in Europe and the world in terms of tourism, as mentioned, but also for business traffic to enable hundreds of workers each day to move on to other destinations.

The main airport is Fiumincino (or, to give it its official name, Leonardo da Vinci). Located approximately 26km to south-west of Rome, the cheapest way to reach the city centre from here is on the shuttle-train, with departures every half an hour to Stazione Termini. The journey lasts 30 minutes and costs €11. If you need to get to different areas of the city, it is also possible to catch other trains from the airport, which go to Trasetevere, Tiburtina and Ostiense (the ticket for this costs €5.50). On the other hand, if you are arriving at the airport during the night, you can take a bus which goes to Stazione Triburtina.

The other airport near to the city is Ciampino (or Giovan Battista Pastine), situated about 20km south-east of the city. There are a number of buses departing from here, either from Metro line A (€1.20 a ticket) or Termini Station (€6 with the Sitshuttle, or €8 with the Terravision).

From here, low-cost flights arrive and depart. Ciampino represents the usual small-to-medium sized airport located a little outside the confines of large European cities (this also goes for cities such as London, Paris, and Barcelona etc.) which you can get to with flights at a reasonable price. The companies which operate out of this airport are the Irish firm Ryan Air, Easy Jet (International and Swiss), as well as the lesser-known Wizz Air

As for taxis, obviously prices vary depending on different times and dates, including an increment of €1.03 per item of luggage. There are, however, fixed-price tariffs available thanks to the town council, from the airports to inside the city walls. The prices (valid for up to 4 people including luggage) are €40 from Fiumincino and €30 from Ciampino.
This practical advice is relevant to all tourists arriving from other Italian or European cities and that have to get to their accommodation (appartamenti Roma and hotel a Roma). For further information please take a look at this blog, which contains interesting advice on the city and the alloggio Roma.
