Being a stay at home mom now, I am constantly barraged with advertisements on the television promoting the Oprah Winfrey show. Not only am I inundated with Oprah from my own television on several stations, but just more than half of the other moms in the neighborhood bow down at the Oprah altar and watch the Oprah Winfrey show religiously. Is Oprah really deserving of all these women following every word that she says like she is some mastermind that is receiving special messages from a higher power?

For Christ’s sake, women are honestly entranced with her. Not only does she have an extremely highly rated television show in the Oprah Winfrey show but through that show she has started a book club. While I do think it is fabulous that she is getting all of these people to read, I don’t understand why these women are reading the books that Oprah picks out. Why not be a little daring and actually go to a bookstore or library and pick out a book for yourself that you might enjoy? No, instead just watch the Oprah Winfrey show and she’ll tell you what to read and what you will enjoy. The mindlessness just blows me away.

Everything that Oprah touches seems to turn to gold or become humongous news. Her magazine has a huge subscription base and it isn’t even that good. The Oprah Winfrey show mentions certain products and they become best sellers. Oprah finds a moronic “doctor”, Dr. Phil, and gives him his own television show that is receiving high ratings because of his association with the Oprah Winfrey show.

The scandal with James Frey and the whole biography that wasn’t true turned into one of the biggest stories of the year, with Mr. Frey becoming a household name and even getting interviews on Larry King and the Today Show. All because his book was popular by just being on the Oprah Winfrey book club list, and therefore became the most important book of the year when it came to light that it was untrue. Nonsense! There are so many other things that deserve more attention than this piece of work, but the Oprah Winfrey show made this take center stage.

Seriously people, everything on the Oprah Winfrey show is not the end all be all. Take some initiative and think for yourselves on things. Find your own interests, your own products and your own books to read! Although if you can’t figure that out for yourself, maybe you deserve to be lumped in with the Oprah Winfrey show sheep.
