Children Sleeping Bags for Camping
When your kids sleep well at night, so do you. Your kid’s warmth and comfort depends on you and the sleeping gear you got for them.
However, children have different requirements to adults when it comes to sleeping bags. The design of children sleeping bags are a lot more simpler.
The materials used for making kids sleeping bags are usually cheaper. Most are filled with synthetics rather than down. If you’re going to invest in a high quality bag for your kids, better make sure that they won’t outgrow them in a few years.
It’s not only price that’s the reason why synthetics are much more preferable to down. Synthetics are less easily damaged than down and they’re easier to maintain. This is important especially when your kids are in the nappy years. Though uncommon, down sleeping bags for kids are not that hard to find but be prepared to pay a hefty bill.
If you’re not car camping or you’re going to camp on organized campsites, weight is an important consideration. The difference in weight between down sleeping bags and synthetic sleeping bags may not be very big to adults but for kids who carry their gear it may be significant.
Lower quality kids sleeping bags are more popular. This is probably because kids tend to sleep warmer than adults. Kids sleep warmer than adults even when they have smaller bodies because they have a higher metabolic rate.
Most non-rectangular kids sleeping bags have a hood, draft tube and draft collar. The hood plays an important role is keeping your child warm because we lose most of our heat through the head.
The North Face Tigger is generally known for its warmth and comfort but it also has some important safety features. There are no cords to get tangled in and no way of adjusting the hood or chest section so that it closes off completely.
A draft tube enhances the effectiveness of a kids sleeping bag by preventing heat from escaping through the zipper coils. Draft collars enhances the bag’s insulation properties even further by prevent heat from radiating above the shoulders and out of the sleeping bag.
Other well known brands that make sleeping bags for kids include L.L. Bean, REI, Lafuma, Deuter, Big Agnes and Integral Designs. There are others as well and they’re quite easy to find.
There’s a lot of kids sleeping bags to choose from including ones with all the bells and whistles to something that looks like two blanket sewn together. However, cheap sleeping bags for kids are much more common and usually does the job well enough especially if it’s to be used only in the summer.
