Field Goals Adds To The Total Rugby Points

Sunday, September 21st, 2008 by www

Watching rugby makes much more sense and becomes far more enjoyable when you understand the rugby scoring system. Once interpreted it is quite simple to follow and once you grasp the points value for each activity you will find the game more stimulating.

There are a few fundamental ways to put points on the rugby scoreboard. They are the try, penalty try, conversion, penalty goal and the drop goal (also known as field goal or drop kick).

Drop Goals

The conversion and the penalty goal require a specialist kicker to place the ball and kick it between the vertical goal posts and over the crossbar of the goal posts. The kicker may select between using a kicking tee, pile of sand or sawdust to kick the ball from. He steps back and then runs up to the ball prior to kicking between the posts.

A drop goal is different to a conversion in that the player drops the ball from his hands and attempts to kick the ball over the crossbar and between the vertical goal posts during the run of play. It is a specific skill, and field goals are rare - they take precise timing and lots of practice to master.

A referee can give a penalty try if he believes the defending team purposely fouled the attacking team in order to prevent them finishing a move that would have resulted in a try being scored. The official phrase is ‘beyond reasonable doubt’.

To show this the referee runs to a central point beneath the crossbar of the goalposts, raises his arm and blows his whistle. The attacking team gets the chance of a conversion kick with the chance to add points to the total.

Kicking Penalties

Touching down a try is the best way to rack up points in rugby. A try is recorded when the attacking team crosses the defending teams goal-line and places the ball on the ground in their in-goal area. When a try is scored the referee lifts his arm and blows his whistle. Scoring the try and the penalty try are valued at five points each.

On a try being scored the referee stands at the point where the try was scored and points in a line back up the pitch parallel to the sidelines. The goal kicker can take the conversion attempt at any point along that line.

Usually the kicker takes the conversion attempt somewhere he/she feels happy around 20 - 30 metres from the goalposts. Converting the try adds 2 points to the try scoring side. When a team successfully kicks a penalty goal they are awarded 3 points.

While a team is making a conversion attempt, the defending team must stand on or behind the goal-line. As the kicker gets ready to take the conversion, the players are allowed to rush the kicker as he begins his run at the ball.

The tally for a converted try is a total of 7 points (5 for the try and 2 for the conversion).

Rugby Points

For any team to reach the top there is a requirement for a prominent goal kicker to be in their team. Goal kickers are immensely valuable as there are many indiscretions in the play of a normal rugby game.

Any of these indiscretions being made in a teams defensive area of play gives a chance for their opponents to score valuable points against them. A kicker who can successfully kick a goal from any area of the field instantly puts incredible pressure on the opposing team.

A top class goal kicker in your team, with a specialist field goal kicker or two, definitely makes a great basis for any team to get their highest rugby score. It also puts pressure on any team they play.

Kitesurfing Safety Tips

Saturday, September 13th, 2008 by www

Kitesurfing or Kiteboarding, as some people like to call it, is gaining popularity for being an extreme sport. This is because it involves a certain amount of danger. However, you can keep the chances of having a kitesurfing accident to a minimum simply by following these tips:

1) Get proper training – kitesurfing is not an activity where you can just “wing it”. You need proper training in order for you to enjoy this activity. Actually, you need proper training in order to keep it safe for you and those who might be in your path. But where exactly do you get proper training?

Well, there might be a kitesurfing school near you, especially if you are in an area where the sport has many supporters. Such a school may be able to teach you the basics of the sport as well as give you some very valuable advice, which may just help you reduce the risk of a kitesurfing accident.

If you can’t find a school near you, try to find someone who has experience in the sport. He or she might be able to teach you the ropes and give you some tips on the more important points of kiteboarding safety.

2) Get the right equipment – a huge part of kiteboarding relies on the type of equipment you get. This means that you should try and get the best equipment possible. Before going on a shopping spree, try and do some research on what sort of equipment you are really going to need.

Why is getting the right equipment so important? You should realize that skills are not enough to propel you over the water, if you don’t have a board or a kite. That would be called swimming, not kitesurfing. Getting poor equipment can be very dangerous. You do not want your board collapsing or your kite ripping in the middle of a trick. This can become a very serious accident.

Actually, as the sport has gained popularity, it is also becoming safer for practitioners. Why? This is simply because technology has been developed specifically for the safety of the kitesurfer and for the increase in profits of various companies.

3) Choose the right location – kitesurfing is not a sport that you can just do anywhere. There are certain restrictions when it comes to the location. Some places, for example, ban kiteboarding from their shores. This is usually for safety reasons. If you want to engage in this activity, make sure that there is no heavy beach traffic. In other words, make sure that there are no people that you would likely hit.

If you are a beginner, make sure that you don’t go daredevil and attempt winds that are beyond your skills. Make sure that you practice on tamer locations before you attempt to board in more challenging locales. Ideally, you should make sure that the area you surf in is free of any obstructions such as power lines, rocks, or beaches.

4) Check the weather – Always remember that you will be playing with a force of nature. Learn to respect it. If you do not have the skills necessary to handle the winds, or if the weather turns bad, you had better not risk it.

You should listen to forecasts so you won’t find yourself in danger once you are in the water. Remember: the weather can change awfully fast.

Basic Golf Tips To Better Your Game Of Golf

Saturday, September 13th, 2008 by www

Just starting out at golf is an exciting time and you will be eager to learn all you can about our glorious game. I’ve put together below a few basic golf tips to get you started and hopefully to improve your game.

When you first start searching the web for basic golf tips you will come across sites offering golf gear at discount prices. Some will offer top brands but that have been used. My first golf tip is to seriously consider these when you are just starting out. A set of official Callaway used golf clubs will cost approximately half that of a new set. When you are just starting out this makes a lot of sense. Not everyone takes to golf and if you don’t at least you won’t be stuck with an expensive set of clubs in your Locker.

My second basic golf tip is to subscribe to a number of golf publications and magazines so that you will be able to get monthly or weekly help with your golf game. These magazines will even tell you what not to copy from golfing professionals! Publications like Golf Tips Magazine or Golf Magazine have lots of articles for you to choose from when it comes to getting basic golf tips.

Basic golf tips number 3 is to be flexible. If you let yourself be a little more limber when you’re playing golf, you can get the most out of your time on the green, and can increase your golf skills quicker because you will be more relaxed

Basic golf tips number 4 is get your positioning correct. The most ideal position for most golfers, no matter what the skill level is to have the left arm bent and the left foot up. Trying to keep the legs or arms too straight can cause injury and shorten the time you’re able to play golf, and could interfere with the direction your golf ball will go in.

Basic golf tips number 5 is to take some time to learn golf rules. Understanding the rules means you will enjoy the game more

Your last basic golf tip is to take some time to learn and understand the etiquette of golf. Our game is played by Ladies, Gentlemen and Royalty and as such you need to show respect at all times to your fellow golfers. Much of the etiquette is designed to make the course a safer place and is just a matter of common sense and respect. Never drive if the group in front are in range for instance. Don’t step in the line of an opponents ball on the green and repair any mark left by your ball landing on the green are just common courtesies.

Carry on searching the web for more online golf tips to improve your swing and your overhaul game of golf.

Is Snowboarding That Thrilling?

Saturday, September 13th, 2008 by www

Snowboarding is a thrilling twist that incorporates some of the basic concepts of skiing. However, it is much more daring and many people find it offers them the challenges that they love while out in the snow. To keep a snowboard on the feet, there are straps on the board. Most snowboards look similar to a surfboard but shorter. There are no poles used for snowboarding and so you have to use your body to control it.

Even though the concepts behind snowboarding have been around since the 1970’s, the popularity of it exploded around 1998. It became very popular with the younger crowds that often engaged in skateboarding activities. This is even now on of the most anticipated events that takes place in the Winter Olympic
Games. The internet is also responsible for the popularity of snowboarding as there are numerous sites offering videos of the activities that really capture the attention of viewers.

Due to the popularity of snowboarding today, many ski resorts now rent snowboarding equipment and offer lessons for free on their slopes. They would prefer for people to learn the basics of snowboarding from a qualified individual than risk getting injured attempting the moves on their own. The fact that so many other people make snowboarding look easy can be misleading.

Some people believe you have to know how to ski before you can learn how to snowboard. This continues to be an issue of hot debate and it appears that it simple comes down to what you learned first. There are plenty of snowboarders out there that don’t know how to ski. It is similar to the issue of learning to drive on a stick shift – those that did think it was easy while those that didn’t can’t imagine having one more thing to try to do while learning how to drive.

Many ski resorts often hold snowboarding competitions as well for great prizes including cash and free lodging at their ski resort. The freedom that people get with snowboarding makes it very enjoyable. The various flips and turns that people perform while skateboarding can be incorporated into a snowboarding routine. It is fascinating to see snowboarder’s compete as they attempt the most difficult moves in order to get the best ranking from the judges.

There are also plenty of big name sponsors that have come on board for these snowboarding competitions. Some of them are only for professionals while many of them are reserved for amateurs. The Ticket to Ride is a snowboarding competition that takes place in various locations in order to continually promote this winter sport.

The advances that have taken place in the overall design of the snowboards and the number of ski slopes that now allow them to be used. It is even possible to have your snowboard customized so it has the look and fit that you really want. This is common for those individuals that engage in snowboarding on a regular basis. The forecasting for snowboarding through 2015 indicates that by then snowboarding will be more popular than skiing.

One of the biggest problems with snowboarding is the risk of injuries. While wearing helmets are recommended very few people wear them while engaging in this sport. In order to encourage this some ski resorts won’t allow you to snowboard without a helmet. Some of the top names in the sport have also volunteered their time to promote the use of helmets in posters, magazines, and commercials.

Even though snowboarding is a thrilling winter sport to enjoy, you need to make sure you keep safety in your thoughts as well. Never snowboard in unauthorized areas and without the right skills to do it safely. Make sure you use quality equipment that fits you securely so that you minimize injuries to your body.

What Next For Liverpool Soccer Club

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 by www

Rumour has it that Liverpool Soccer Club may be following the same path as local rivals Manchester City Soccer Club. Apparently, a £500 million bid has been put in for the club by Middle Eastern company Dubai International Capital (DIC), the investment arm of Dubai’s government.

American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett are said to be mulling this offer over. Hicks and Gillett bought the club in February 2007 and their reign at Anfield started off well with the record purchase of Fernando Torres from Atletico Madrid and the promise of a new stadium.

However, it wasn’t long before the two wealthy businessmen began arguing over certain aspects of running the soccer club and the cracks in their relationship really began to show. Hicks and Gillett bought the soccer club on finance so any potential buyout would clear any lingering debts and leave manager Rafa Benitez with stacks of cash to spend in the January transfer window.

The man behind the takeover bid is Sheikh Mohammed, real name Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Skeih Mohammed is the ruler of Dubai and the Prime Minister and Vice President of the United Arab Emirates. The Skeih is said to be the seventh richest person in the world with a personal wealth of over £7 billion.

Manager Rafa Benitez seems to be pleased with the news of the potential takeover saying “I have talked to the chairman and chief executive about this and I was pleased with what I heard. It is always good for a club to have more money and more possibilities.”

Liverpool Soccer Club, five times champions of Europe but yet to win the English Premier League, have given DIC permission to study their books ahead of the potential takeover. If the £500 million bid is successful, we will see the construction of a 60,000 capacity stadium at a cost of £200 million.

Rick Parry, Liverpool Chief Executive, also seems to be excited by the news of the takeover bid saying “This is the latest step on the road of finding the long-term investment that the club needs. This is very important in terms of the proposed new stadium, which is key to plans for the regeneration of the local community. On the pitch, Liverpool remains focused on winning and, here again, this is all about doing a deal that gives us the long-term resources to do that.” Liverpool have their soccer positions filled with some of Europes finest players and their fans demand they are challenging for major honors every year.

The news of the potential takeover is likely to be music to the ears of Liverpool Soccer Club fans, however, there will be those that won’t be tremendously happy about the news that yet another Premiership soccer club is facing a high-profile foreign takeover bid. Several Premiership soccer clubs have undergone foreign takeovers in the last few years including Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa, Portsmouth and very recently Manchester City.

Easy Way to Doing Abdominal Exercises Properly

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008 by www

Abdominal exercises will not help you get rid of fat from stomach in any way unless the workouts regime is aptly complemented by an appropriate diet. However in general, well-directed abs exercises will work on building muscles in your midsection. So what should you do for your abdominal exercises to really be effective and by themselves produce a visible washboard stomach?

The exercises will surely have a say in the building of a flatter stomach provided you have a very quick metabolism. Following a custom built set of abdomen exercises along with scientific dietary supplements will be of great help for a fabulous abdominal shape that resembles a chocolate slab.

We regularly hear complaints that regardless of the types of exercises or reps they complete, abdominal exercises have not helped them firm up their abs. Unfortunately to sculpt good set of 6 pack abs, only a few abdominal exercises should be used, definitely not all. Not even the most popular of the ab exercises will be of any help because this is the set of exercises that most people do till they either exhaust or get injuries but to no avail. Then there are several others who ask us whether weight training with abdominal exercises influence their abs at all.

If you are frustrated and intrigued by questions like this, my only answer to your questions is personalized exercises and diet plan. You can’t have a “one shirt fit all” strategy where key deciders like age, physical condition, metabolisms, work and cultural backgrounds have a strong say.

You may also agree that each of these stomach exercises will certainly strengthen and build stomach muscles under various conditions in different persons of different ages. Actually this is the biggest problem, and those infomercials, exercise machines in gyms, special abs workouts, sit-ups and crunches will burn the fat out of your stomach easily unless they are personalized for your conditions.

The fact is that these exercises can tone up your abdominal muscles, but definitely not without leaving a layer of fat covering these muscles as long as you aren’t calorie starving. For stomach workouts to remove any fat from your waistline you will need to inject an element of monitored cardio vascular exercises during personalization. But don’t forget, it is impossible to spot reduce fat except by liposuction. Secondly, abdominal exercises, no amount of it, will never produce the desired abs if you forget to keep a tab on your diet. For most, a combo of Kegel and abdominal exercises seems to work to some extent.

The point we are trying to make here is exercises will handle muscle and strength building part of it while diet and cardio take care of issues like fat and shape. Exercises are still the best option for those who want to tone up their abs muscles for whatever reason. Remember, the same exercises that help you work your abs wall are good enough to keep your wellness intact as well.

For those who would like to try the little unusual way of taking care of it, please have a look at power yoga online - this is a special “bodybuilding” type of yoga.

The Benefits Of Sports In Reducing Stress

Sunday, September 7th, 2008 by www

Sports Recreation: Relieve Stress and Have Fun

The world we live in is growing increasingly fast-paced, stressful, and filled with responsibility. Because of this, everyone needs some time to relax and have some recreation. Our modern way of life also tends to be sedentary, and the meals we eat are often not very healthy. Exercise is a very important component in renewing us. For these reasons, sports recreation activities are some of the best recreation we can choose. There are many options for hobbies to provide sports recreation. You may even want to learn some new recreational sports skills.

Courses to learn new sports recreation skills can be found online and in larger cities. You can learn and participate in team sports through the local Y and other organizations. Team sports recreation activities you might like to participate in include softball, baseball, basketball, and sometimes soccer for younger people. Another team sport you might enjoy is bowling. Regardless of your skill level you can find a bowling team to have fun with.

Individual sports recreation activities you can learn and participate in include golf, tennis, running, aerobic dance, gymnastics, and horseback riding. Don’t overlook bicycling and weight training too. Many of these sports can be learned at the local Y as well. For some of these, you’ll want to have a friend to play against or share the exerience with. Many runners, for instance, like to run with a friend. And games like tennis and handball really need cooperation for best results.

If you’d rather, you can learn about sports recreation skills online. You can find courses to teach almost any sport or activity you can think of including underwater hockey, fly-fishing, and para-gliding in the Alps! Of course, unless you can get some hands-on experience you’ll only have the theories of the sport. Still, online courses are a good way to get a taste of different sports and recreational activities you might someday want to try out.

A really fun sports recreation game you might get a chance to play is ping pong. Ping pong, or table tennis as it is sometimes called, is played on a table with rubber coated paddles and extremely lightweight plastic balls. You must hit the ball with your paddle so that it strikes the table and clears the net before your opponent strikes it and bounces it back to you. One way to become more adept at ping pong and increase your chance of winning is to sometimes hit the ball harder than at other times. This keeps your opponent guessing what you will do next.

Sports recreation activities are a great way to get exercise and relieve stress. They are also a lot of fun. Whether with friends or alone, everyone needs a favorite sports recreation to take part in.
