How To Avoid Buying Expensive Software

Saturday, October 4th, 2008 by www

Most new business owners are strapped for cash. Inventory, payroll, business licenses, trade certificates, advertising, and lead generation are just a few of the start-up expenses that a new business must face. Certain expenses are nonnegotiable, leaving the new business owner to decide what to do with the money that is left. Often the new business owner simply cannot afford to pay for expensive software applications, many of which are priced in the hundreds of dollars.

But it is a tradeoff to be considered carefully, as quality must not suffer. Documents put together in a haphazard manner send a message that the company is small, broke, and untrustworthy. It is critical for the new business owner, who does not yet have a solid list of references, to exude professionalism in every aspect of his business.

Enter freeware. The concept of freeware has its history in the early days of the personal computer. Originally, computers were hulking machines, much more impressive for their sheer size and mass than for their processing power. The self-taught engineers of Silicon Valley were much more interested in perfecting the hardware than in ensuring practical usability for the home market. This opened up a niche for self-taught engineers in other parts of the country who, as they had paid a lot of money to buy these machines, had a vested interest to see what they could make them do. So they wrote programs and released them to their friends and acquaintances. As they acquired modems and began logging into BBS’s (basically forums before we had the Internet), they began to distribute their programming more widely. Shareware began to develop, in which a program was released for free with certain features disabled, and by sending a small amount of money (usually $5-$10) to the programmer, the user would receive a code to unlock those features.

A reasonable alternative to costly software applications is freeware. Freeware has its roots in the earliest days of personal computers. Back then, computers were impressive to look at, but not so impressive to use. Computer designers in those days were largely self-taught, experimenting in their home garages in Silicon Valley. Their interest was in building a machine that would work. As the early computers reached other areas of the country, others took on the task of developing programs, giving the computer a new level of functionality. The early programmers wrote software for themselves and their friends. Gradually the programs were released to a wider audience through the use of BBS’s (the early forerunner of today’s forums). They were often released with a few key features disabled. For five or ten dollars sent to directly to the programmer, the user received a code that unlocked the full functionality of the program. The disabled versions of programs were known as shareware.

Thus an entirely new niche had been born, with a new market created by those tired of spending ever more money on software of ever decreasing quality. Freeware designers have stepped up to meet the new demand and their work is admirable, not uncommonly even bettet than the paid alternatives. The freeware of today is often provided as “open source,” meaning that the code is editable for anyone who cares to use it. This allows any user to add his own twists, and even to release his adaptations for public use.

The selection of freeware available today is huge. Open Office (www.openoffice.org) packages a word processor, spreadsheet and database program with a multimedia presentation program and even a very usable graphics package. Mozilla’s offerings (www.mozilla.com), notably the Firefox web browser and Thunderbird e-mail, are superior in innumerable ways, particularly in stability and safety. Gimp photo editing (gimp-win.sourceforge.net) and Free Accounting Software (www.freeaccountingsoftware.net/default.aspx) complete the basics of what the average home-based business owner should need.

Freeware offers a reasonable alternative to costly software options. The programs are comparable, and freeware allows the user almost unlimited flexibility to customize his experience. For the new business owner, who is struggling to appropriately allocate limited resources, freeware is often the best choice.

Basic: A Computer Programming Language

Friday, October 3rd, 2008 by www

Computer programming has its own language, and that’s just the beginning of the software adventure. There are many different languages in computer programming, and all of them have their own purposes. In order to understand the importance of computer programming languages, knowing them, and tweaking them, one has to understand the importance of computer programming. Computer programming produces software packages, among other things, to meet our needs. We may need software for accounting, making photos bigger or smaller, or editing our home videos. Behind all these software packages are the computer programmers who use their individual languages in order to create the software.

BASIC: A Computer Programming Language
One such computer programming language is the Beginner’s All-Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code, or BASIC. BASIC is actually composed of many different kinds of programming languages that are actually higher level than most other languages. This BASIC family of computer programming languages was first designed in the 1960’s, and was originally made for non-science people to gain better access to computers. During that time, using a computer required that a person write customized software, a task that only mathematicians and scientists were equipped to do. The BASIC language was therefore a bridge for people of other professions to take advantage of the power of computers.

When the 1970’s came, the BASIC language, whether in its original form or a variant of it, spread onto microcomputers; and by the 1980’s, even home computers could be run in BASIC. Today, BASIC remains popular, as it serves as the basis for many of the more modern programming languages that have been developed in the wake of advanced operating systems and the Internet.

When it was originally conceived, BASIC was meant for beginners: it was a language that people could use easily, whether or not they were educated in mathematics and the sciences. The language also had to be a general purpose one, in that it had to serve many different needs, and not only those that mathematicians and scientists required. The root language of BASIC also had to allow for advanced features to be plugged on as experts grew more and more adept in it, and as the language found further use in many other fields. BASIC was also meant to be interactive, and was designed to show error messages that were clear and friendly; that is, these error messages had to completely explain what the problem was, which would hopefully allow the user to fix it faster and easier. Computer Data Recovery Saves Big Business

Sunday, September 28th, 2008 by www

Disk data recovery is something most people take for granted, but your personal livelihood or business could seriously be at risk if data recovery is not possible. Imagine a major publishing house preparing to release a brand new magazine. Data loss could be a disaster for a business like this that must regularly store so many important files and other information. The complex task of recreating a vast amount of articles, pictures, advertisements and other files in such a short time would seem quite unrealistic. However, disk data recovery can recover lost data in a flash.

How to get laid off instantly

Disk data recovery helped save a company’s important files since poor backups were kept. Losing this crucial information could really have created a financial and professional bind for the business. While it’s easy to focus on the immediate money that could have be lost because of this problem, the long term effect to your business can be much more catastrophic. Luckily their data was recovered, the employee of this publishing house who forgot to confirm the backups daily wasn’t as lucky - he was fired!

The publishing company was informed about the availability of disk data recovery tools, but the bad experience made them extremely reluctant to take additional chances of using recovery tools on their only data source. They could not take the chance of anything else going wrong. Relationships and millions were on the line.

The best solution

Many small businesses do not have the luxury of choosing a professional disk data recovery service as soon as they realize important files have been lost. For these businesses, the cost of using a disk data recovery utility first is a more economical solution.

Disk data recovery programs can cost very little but most good ones go for just about a hundred bucks for the more powerful utilities. Professional services usually set you back hundreds of dollars and even thousands. All of this depends on the complexity of the situation and how quickly you need your data back. It’s important to know that there are some situations where only professional disk data recovery services can help.

Things to consider

The lack of regular local backups is one of the most common causes of data loss and disk data recovery. This leaves your data vulnerable. More and more businesses are using laptops for increased productivity and mobility. However, the incidence of disk data recovery has also increased as a result. When a laptop is taken from the company server it poses a security risk unless backup precautions are taken. Specifically, when you pre-install disk data recovery software onto your laptop it will record everything you do. A USB portable storage device also offers increased data safety on the road. This way you can simply press a button to get back that important file.

Take action now

Why risk losing your job over failing to confirm backups? Doing what needs to be done to prevent data loss is your best bet. When you have just lost data, make sure to use disk data recovery as soon as possible to increase the chances of getting back your files.

Producing Your Very First Web Site Can Be Free And Pleasingly Simple

Thursday, September 25th, 2008 by www

These days, when starting any small home business, it is almost financial suicide not to have a web site and this is the main reason why almost all new companies have one. You will find that there are a great many that exist only in Cyberspace. If you are one of the many thinking about starting their own online business you might have already gauged the price of professional web design and been shocked at the extortionate prices commanded. This article takes a look at the options open to those who want build their own website focusing upon the free or cheap options.

Website Building Software

Possibly the main reason why professional web design is usually so expensive is that a professional website actually is expensive to create. Professional web site designers charge such high fees because they frequently are required to pay wages, on top of this they may have other expenses to pay for, for example office rental, transport costs, repairs and renewals and equipment leasing and this does not even include the expense of the most modern computer hardware and software, such as graphics tablets, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and the likes, that can be ridiculously expensive. However there are a multitude of alternatives which are cheaper (and some free) which are easily able to handle the building of even the most complicated website designs. It is even possible to get free web site designs (commonly stated as free CSS templates).

Finding the cheap or free alternatives is as easy as a search on your favorite search engine. Simply search for “web design freeware” or “web design shareware”, the difference between shareware and freeware is that one is free whereas the other requests a small payment for use (especially if itis being used to make a person some cash). You will discover a huge selection of web creation software available and many are so fantastic that some professionals use them!

One of the most exciting things about free webdesign software available today is that the vast majority of it offers a WYSIWYG interface which makes web site building as easy as drawing. However you will need to study a small amount about the programming languages used in web design, for example HTML & CSS, if you wish to build something wonderful and different. Even a basic understanding of HTML and CSS will help a great deal.

Getting Started With Your First Web Site

If building a website from nothing using HTML and CSS is a little bit frightening then you can search the Internet for free CSS templates. You will be amazed at the superb quality of some of the designs which can be easily altered to exactly match your web design requirements. If even this method is a little too overpowering for you there is something slightly different which is one of the most favored ways a person can create a website - blogging.

The amazing thing about a blog is that they will cost you zilch, yes, get that, this absolutely cool web site creation tool is given freely! Obviously the companies charge a small amount occasionally but usually these small fees are for optional extras, such as extra space for your web site and other added functionality. However, there are companies such as Blogger and Wordpress that are already functional enough to use without the optional extras and most folk are able get by with a basic account indefinitely. To start with you are given a small amount of web storage for your pictures and blog posts and the total process of creating a blog is easy and simple, so easy infact, that a child could do it. It is rather similar to a word processor, such as that found in Open Office or Microsoft Office, you just write your content and press a button saying “publish” and the blog is published immediately.

As soon as you become a good blogger you will start to notice the limitations of a basic blogging account, it is then when you should have a think about an upgrade or getting your own web space or server depending upon your requirements. Obviously if you have some free web storage from your ISP (internet service provider then you might be able to utilize it for blogging. Yet another thing concerning blogging is that the software is most often free, Wordpress is the most commonly used.

Conclusion

Remember creating your first web site web site can be as easy as searching for shareware, freeware, free web site templates, free Wordpress templates etc. A blog (weblog) can be on any topic you choose and it is very easy to build, so easy that there are literally millions of bloggers on the Internet. so what is stopping you, why don’t you get started on a site today?

Programming 101: Cnc

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 by www

After World War II, people realized that they have to manufacture goods at a faster rate and at a lower cost. Hence, mass production trending came to be. Those events led to the development of the Numerical Control (NC) machines which in turn led to the Computer Numerical Control (CNC).

HOW TO PROGRAM A CNC MACHINE

CNC programming uses a code similar in structure to BASIC. So, if you know how to construct a simple counting program, chances are, you already know what a G-Code looks like. However, there a few other things you have to consider before you start encoding instructions.

Programming 101: CNC
The first thing that you have to do is to assign values for each of the variables. These variables include the programmable motion directions (axes), and the reference point for the axes. The values that you assign to these variables dictate the movement of the machine.

The next thing that you have to do is to take into account the accessories of the machine. Many machines have accessories that are designed to enhance the capabilities of the basic device. However, using these accessories requires you to include them in the coding system. This means that if you want a more efficient machine, you will have to know the machine inside out.

READING CODES

After those steps, you have to create a subprogram that will deal with the math. This step will then allow your machine to compute the necessary variables and effectively operate without stopping to ask the operator what the limitations are.

To show you what these codes look like, here’s an example from Wikipedia:

#100=3 (bolt circle radius)
#101=10 (how many holes)
#102=0 (x position of ctr of bolthole)
#103=0 (y position of ctr of bolthole)
#104=0 (angle of first hole
Tool call,
spindle speed,and offset pickup,etc
G43 in some cases (tool length pickup)
G81(drill cycle)
call sub program
N50
G80
M30

Subprogram
N100
#105=((COS#104)*#100) (x location)
#106=((SIN#104)*#100) (y location)
x#105 y#106 (remember your G81 code is modal)
If #100 GT 360 goto N50
#100=(#100+(360/#101))
Goto 100

In the code above, the machine is a drill. The operator utilized a loop in order to keep the machine from stopping. The subprogram then governs the cycle of the machine. This code is still quite a simple code. Other machines require the inclusion of the maximum RPM in the coding.

Programming CNC Machines With G-Codes
An easier way of programming CNC machines would be the use of Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). This system takes on the brunt of programming so that it doesn’t seem so tedious and frustrating. It is still similar to BASIC.

Another programming enhancement that was developed was the parametric programs or the logical commands. These programs were designed to shorten lengthy codes in order to make them user friendly. However, these codes do not always use the same language with every machine. The language and sequence often varies depending on the typ of machine you will be working on. More on The CNC Family.

Where Would We Be Without Anti Virus Softwre

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 by www

The Internet has to be one of the greatest inventions ever made. We can easily search for any kind of information, be able to communicate to people all over the world and take stuff right off of a webpage and save it to our computer. Endless hours can be spent on a computer since the Internet has so much to offer. You can play games, chat to friends, build websites and look at pictures of your favorite celebrities. Unfortunately, not every website that we visit is safe. There are lots of viruses on the web that can affect our desktops and laptops. Antivirus software protects our computer against harmful viruses.

There is lots of different software available to protect your computer from harm so there is no excuse for not having one installed. Typically if you go out and buy a brand new computer, you’ll be offered antivirus software as an add-on. If not, you can always use one of the many programs that are readily available. Each comes with different features, but it’s essential to look for a software product that offers regular updates. New viruses are popping up on a daily basis and you really want to stay on top of any new ones, and keep your computer completely protected.

It’s really an important product for all computer users. Students who do a lot of computer work typing essays and doing research papers need to know that their devices are protected against pesky viruses. The last thing they need is a virus to erase their work that is due the next day or to prevent them from opening it to print it. With antivirus software to protect their computer, they can work without the additional worry that something is suddenly going to wipe out their hard drive.

You’ll find that there are two ways to get this computer essential. One is to download it free from the Internet. Several different websites offer antivirus programs without cost. They will offer basic protection and for some users this is more than adequate. If you do spend quite a bit of time surfing, and if you receive emails with attachments, you’d likely prefer to purchase one of the many antivirus software products that are available.

Installing them is a breeze and you don’t need to be technical at all to have them up and running in no time. Your antivirus software will quietly run in the background behind your other applications and will pop up if a problem does arise. It’s a great idea to set the software up so it does run a full scan regularly. You can arrange this to be anytime day or night that is most convenient for you.

Keeping your computer virus free isn’t difficult. All it takes is installation of a quality product and regular updates. The next time a destructive virus is making the rounds, you’ll be glad your computer won’t fall victim to it.

How To Protect Your Computer Data With Security Awareness

Saturday, September 20th, 2008 by www

If we were to take a conversation about security, such as this one, and place in the context of a social setting twenty years ago, people would have thought that you were crazy. The issue of home computer security in our society has, by necessity, reached a higher level than ever.

Everything from credit card fraud to computer spyware has consumers wondering what they need to do to protect themselves. While much of the worry is well founded, the truth about what we need to do protect our assets can be a little cloudy. It’s hard to differentiate between rumor and fact and most of us aren’t technologically proficient enough to really understand how computer firewalls work or what they do for us.

data computer security
Start with the pc security software. Your goal is to prevent others from accessing your data remotely. A combination of computer firewalls and antivirus PC security software can take your sensitive information from unprotected to secure with very little effort. A firewall can be considered your first line of defense when connected to the internet.

In order for information that is behind a firewall to be sent or received from your computer, permission must be granted by the firewall. You can set up your firewall to always grant access to programs you trust and always block access to programs you do not trust. You can also set the firewall to ask for your confirmation before granting access to an unknown program.

Antivirus software protects your computer from viruses that are transmitted over the internet and through file exchanges. A good antivirus program will continually monitor all of your file transfers. However, it is still advisable to fully scan your entire system for viruses once a week.

You can schedule this scan to run automatically while you are asleep or away from home. You will also need to sign up for automatic updates to the antivirus program, as new viruses are released daily.

computer firewalls
Set an administrative password even if you are the only user of your computer. This will prevent unauthorized parties from opening your desktop and looking through your files. The password should be easy to remember but difficult to guess.

If you want to allow house guests or friends to use your computer, create a separate guest account that does not have administrator access. Check online at Microsoft.com for instructions on setting up accounts or ask a computer-savvy friend for help.

Consider physical changes to make your entire computer less likely to be stolen. Store a laptop in a lockable cabinet or safe when not in use and be sure to actually lock the cabinet. You can also buy computer locks that are designed to lock your laptop or desktop computer to a desk or wall.

Be especially vigilant when traveling with your laptop. Consider installing GPS tracking on your laptop, always use a locking case, and keep the laptop in your hotel safe when not in use. At home, you should have a home security system to protect all of your valuables.

business computer security
As you are heightening your security awareness, it is important to remember that you need to back up your data. Security doesn’t just have to be about thieves. It can also be viruses that will cause your system to crash. Your information won’t be stolen, it will just be destroyed. Take the time to back up the files that are vital to your survival and keep them in a secure location.

Vigilance is the key in putting a wireless computer security to practical use. Developing good habits takes effort, but before you know it your new patterns will be second nature. Do not become paranoid about security, but allow new habits to ease your mind.

DVD Copy Programs Are Used To Copy Different Kinds Of Files To DVD

Thursday, September 18th, 2008 by www

I am really so lazy that I do not even back-up my files or even make copies of the files that I have here to my external hard drive. To think it’s just one click and your files are all copied. Actually, I have several options on how to copy my files to another medium. It can be thru DVD Copy Programs and I can copy my files to different dvd cds or I can just copy my files to my external hard drive. But there is no assurance with the external hard drive as my mother’s hard drive crashed and she lost all the copies of her digital pictures.

What The Heck Are Botnets?

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008 by www

Botnets are networks of computers that hackers have infected and grouped together under their control to propagate viruses, send illegal spam, and carry out attacks that cause web sites to crash.

What the Heck are Botnets?
What makes botnets exceedingly bad is the difficulty in tracing them back to their creators as well as the ever-increasing use of them in extortion schemes. How are they used in extortion schemes? Imagine someone sending you messages to either pay up or see your web site crash. This scenario is starting to replay itself over and over again.

Botnets can consist of thousands of compromised machines. With such a large network, botnets can use Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) as a method to cause mayhem and chaos. For example a small botnet with only 500 bots can bring corporate web sites to there knees by using the combined bandwidth of all the computers to overwhelm corporate systems and thereby cause the web site to appear offline.

Jeremy Kirk, IDG News Service on January 19, 2006, quotes Kevin Hogan, senior manager for Symantec Security Response, in his article “Botnets shrinking in size, harder to trace”, Hogan says “extortion schemes have emerged backed by the muscle of botnets, and hackers are also renting the use of armadas of computers for illegal purposes through advertisements on the Web.”

One well-known technique to combat botnets is a honeypot. Honeypots help discover how attackers infiltrate systems. A Honeypot is essentially a set of resources that one intends to be compromised in order to study how the hackers break the system. Unpatched Windows 2000 or XP machines make great honeypots given the ease with which one can take over such systems.

Computer Security
A great site to read up on this topic more is The Honeynet Project (project.honeynet.org) which describes its own site’s objective as “To learn the tools, tactics and motives involved in computer and network attacks, and share the lessons learned.”
