On The Subject Of War
Saturday, September 6th, 2008 by wwwThe following is the comment of Jean de Eueil, whose father and uncles fell at Agincourt, and who was himself a distinguished captain in later years : ” The night before, they (the French) lay in a field where they were up to the knees in mud, and next morning they marched across a stretch of ploughed land to meet their enemy.
When it came to fighting they arrived few in numbers, one after another, and were out of breath, and were discomfited. And therefore, a corps on foot should never march, but should always await the enemy standing still. For when they march, as they are not all of the same strength, they cannot keep their order. A mere bush is enough to break them up. A power which marches against another power is undone, unless God help it. So let him who can, choose a good position and without loss of time.”
Elsewhere Bueil considers the question how a leader is to act if his enemy adopts these defensive tactics. He should select the best position he can find near them, and get command of the river, if there is one ; for it will not only serve as a protection, and to water the horses and cattle, but it makes provisioning easier. He should deprive the enemy of these facilities, and should make raids round them to intercept their supplies, so that they may be forced to move, and either to attack him on his chosen ground, or give him the opportunity of attacking them on the march.
If the enemy are weaker than he and are likely to escape, and the leader therefore decides to attack them in position, he should choose the weakest side, and make feigned attacks on other sides. Instead of closing with the enemy, he should force them to close with him, or be killed off man by man; and he should leave their rear open for flight, for the cowards will make off and will dismay the brave, and the fugitives can be overtaken afterwards. Men-at-arms should be formed in a solid mass (grosne toarhe) to enable them to break through the enemy’s corps ; for a corps broken through is lost, and if it is thin it is easy to break. Horsemen should never be put in front of foot, but always on the wings.
Such were some of the lessons learnt in the forty years of war which ended in the second expulsion of the English from France. The French had found it necessary to follow the English example, and the war was carried on, not by feudal armies, but by bands of paid soldiers under chiefs who had a contract with the king. In time of truce their pay ceased, and they went in search of employment and plunder. After the peace of Bretigny (1360) several thousand men who had been in English pay found their way to Italy, where they were known as the White Company, and played a part in the wars between Florence and her neighbours. Their leader, John Hawkwood, won great renown, and founded a school of condottieri. Similarly, after the truce of 1444, the Dauphin (afterwards Louis XI.), to relieve France of the burden of the Ecorcheurs, as some of these bands were significantly called, led an army of them against the Swiss. Bueil, who had learnt his trade under La Hire, and had become a leading captain, was in immediate command of the troops which won the battle of St. Jacob. Some 2000 Swiss rashly crossed the Birs, and assailed a force many times their own strength.’ They were cut to pieces, but at a cost which led Louis to hold them in great respect ever after.
It was on the return of the bands from this campaign that Charles VII. entered upon a reorganisation which laid the foundation of the French standing army. Fifteen companies of 100 ” lances ” each, making a total of 9000 men, were taken into permanent pay as regular troops {compagnies d’ordonnance), and the rest of the men were disbanded.

World Map
Friday, June 20th, 2008 by wwwSomeone found a huge world globe map when a school was in the middle of renovations and they asked me if I would like to have it for my daughter. The thing is huge, and it hangs on her bedroom wall now. It was in great shape when we got it, but it now has a few tears along the side. She is rough with everything she has, and it was pulled off the wall a few times. It does have a nice coating over it though, and it has survived crayon and marker attacks with relative ease.
She loves the world globe map because she can point to where we live, and also she can find Australia. We are planning a trip there next year, and she loves to point out where we are going to anyone who will listen. She uses the world globe map to show everyone how far we have to go to get there, but I do realize that she really has no idea how far it really is. To her, an hour trip in the car to go to my mom’s house is a long trip. I don’t know how well she’s going to handle the twenty-four hours it is going to take to get there.
Sometimes we use the world globe map to point out different countries. I never had a geography class in school for some reason, so I don’t know where a lot of countries are. I do have a general idea, but it is fun to look at the world globe map to see how wrong I usually am. There are a lot of places that I should know, but it seems that what I think in my head is often very wrong. We stand there together and learn where some of the countries are, and then we look them up online to learn a little about them.
If you want your own world globe map, you can find them almost anywhere, though you may have to look a little harder to find the one that I have. If you get one for small children, make sure it has a coating over it so that it can take some abuse. These can be great learning tools, and if you home school your children, a world globe map is a must. They can learn about each place, and they can look at the map each time to see where that country is in relation to them and the rest of the world.

Drivers License Test - How to Pass
Tuesday, January 15th, 2008 by wwwHaving a driver’s license gives you the freedom to travel whenever and wherever you desire. It is something that people start looking forward to having when they are still very young. Many jobs require that you have a valid driver license to work for their company and simply having one makes it possible for you have your choice of employment because you will have your own means of transportation. As important as it is to have a driver license it is more important to be safe. This is why before you can receive a driver’s license you will be required to take a test to prove that you know important details about driving.
The best way to make sure you pass the drivers license test is by being as prepared as possible. The best way to accomplish this is by studying the driver’s handbook for your state. You can easily get one of these by visiting your local DMV office and picking one up for free. These handbooks have all the information that you need to pass the drivers test. One of the most important things a driver needs to know to be safe on the road is what the signs mean. This handbook will describe each of the signs used and tell you exactly what each of them means.
When you feel like you have studied enough it is recommended that you go online and look for practice test. These will provide you with questions and answers so you can see just how much you really have learned. Some of the things that will be on the practice test include the following. You can expect to see a section on alcohol and one on road signs and their meanings. There will be a section on all the laws and procedures that will help you be a safer driver. These include all the speed limits, proper lane changing methods, how to park properly and breaking distances to name a few. The practice test will cover a lot more information than what will be on the regular driver’s license test but you can never learn too much about something as important as driving.
There are different requirements that need to be met and different age limits on when you will be allowed to drive. They also have different laws when it comes to how many times you can take the drivers road test if you do not pass the first time. Therefore, taking the practice test is important to ensure you pass the real one the first time so you can begin driving right away.

Learning Basic HTML
Wednesday, November 1st, 2006 by wwwOk, no getting around it, you’ve got to learn some HTML! You don’t have to be great at it, but you really do need the basics. Even if you choose to write and format everything in Word and use PDFs for your ebooks, white papers, articles and the like. You will still need to be able to change headlines on your website, create or change ‘thank you’ and ‘sales’ pages, and add things quickly to your website.
There is a wonderful membership website that I once enjoyed. The site is filled with Internet Entrepreneurs who are successfully running an internet business. There are a series of detailed interviews discussing how each of them got to be successful. Without exception, every single business owner said ‘you have got to do your own website’. The number one regret by those who hired others was the money they spent on web designers. They all learned HTML in the end.
Now I am not saying that you will be stuck building your own websites forever and ever… in fact, I encourage everyone to have “propellerheads” on their team. Its just that even when others are building the sites for you, you will still want to be able to gain access and do some minor changing of copy, colors, font sizes and the like.
HTML is the language of websites. You use HTML to make your fonts large, change colors…
Start a new paragraph, insert a picture…
I am not the best source to teach you. However, Annabella is! She has a wonderful website where I learned HTML. It’s located at:
www.annabella.net/html.html
Once you get through Annabella’s site here is a handy HTML reference guide:
www.devx.com/projectcool/developer/reference/tag-table.html
Here is one more great learning site:
www.utoronto.ca/webdocs/HTMLdocs/NewHTML/htmlindex.html
There are other languages that have been created after HTML. Java, php, and others. However, you will find that for most needs, a bit of HTML is all you need. Anything more complex is best handled by your propellerhead, unless you have plans to really master this area of web design.
At some point you will need an HTML editor. This is a handy tool that lets you see what it is you have created. Let’s take a quick look at the most popular ones.
Microsoft FrontPage® is very popular. It has a lot of great functionality allowing you to build a site from scratch. It’s a WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) editor that lets you graphically design your web pages. It’s one of the easier ones to learn. Though you will still spend a week or two banging your head trying to figure it all out (assuming you are a beginner). One of the things I like about it is the ability to “split†the screen and see the HTML code along with what the web page looks like.
best. It’s the high end program that does everything but the dishes with regards to website design. The learning curve is high. And frankly, if you aren’t going to be building sites right along, it’s expensive.
There are website builders out there that take all the pain out of building websites. You provide the copy and the graphics, and they manage the rest. The one we like at the moment is XSitePro. It is relatively easy, quick and inexpensive as these things go. They also don’t appear to leave a “footprintâ€â€¦ something that the search engines look for to see if your sites are mass-produced.
Check out our resource page at www.BizRecipes.com for this resource along with our many, many favorite things.
I have used a little free HTML editor that is quite delightful.
You can download it at: www.evrsoft.com
It’s called 1st Page 2000 and we used it for several years before moving to FrontPage®. I always like to include a free tool wherever possible for those who must be extra careful with their dollars.
What can I say? You just have to sit down in front of your computer and do it. This is one of those skills that you will have forever. And you will be very glad you learned it.

Reverse Cell Number Look Up Services are Not All the Same!
Wednesday, November 1st, 2006 by wwwYou are looking for a reverse cell number look up service but with so many choices, where do you even start?
Using your phone book or an online yellow page service to find cell numbers is not very effective. Cell phones are not treated like landline phones and therefore it can feel often next to impossible to lookup cell numbers. So what if you want to do a reverse cell number look up because you need to know information and all you have is a cell phone number?
Thankfully with improved technology and communications such services are now readily available. What used to be only available to police and special services is now available to pretty much anyone. Reverse phone number trace providers are as easy to find as doing a search on Google. So if you need to find a person by phone number, and that is the only information you have, the good news is that is all you need.
The question you need to ask however is how reliable is the cell phone tracer provider that I am using. Just because the service mentioned that they allow you to find names from phone numbers through a reverse cell number look up does not mean that the information is detailed, up to date and most of all secure
Detailed Information: How these systems work is they tap into different databases that store this information. The information may be just a name or it may also include more detailed information like the persons address, time zone, and even cell pone service provider.
Up to Date Data: Just because the system is online does not mean that it is constantly in communications with its information source. In fact there are no providers that have full time access to their source databases and because of that you want to find a cell number lookup service that has access a variety of different public records sources that are updated as soon as the source databases make them available.
Security: The internet has opened doors to information that has never before been made available and it has also caused more fraudulent activity to happen then before as well. Identity theft is rampant and you need to trust in the provider that you are using. You need to be sure your information is safe by ensuring that they do not sell or give away your name, mail address, phone number, email address or other personal information that you have shared with them (all services require you to register). You also need to ensure that they use state-of-the-art security measures to protect your information from unauthorized users.
Another often over looked security feature of reverse cell number look up providers is to ensure you are not identified by the party you are looking up. Make sure that no one is notified you are searching for their number. Make sure all searches are private and anonymous.

Plumbing Plumbing Tip: Fixing Minor Leaking Pipes
Friday, October 27th, 2006 by wwwDo you need to find a plumber or plumbing contractor in Denver CO Colorado?
Once you have identified where the leak is coming from, you can stop the leak by either replacing the section that is leaking or covering the affected area with a rubber sheet. If you are not comfortable with replacing the pipe yourself, the easier approach is to wrap the leaking area tightly with a rubber sheet. However, please take note that this approach works well only for minor leaks.
The first step is to measure the diameter of the leaking pipe. Once you have the measurements, go to a hardware store and purchase a rubber sheet and a clamp that fits your pipe. Then, switch off your main water supply and wrap the solid rubber sheet round the area that is leaking. After that, fit the clamp round the pipe and screw it in tightly over the rubber sheet. This will stop most minor leaks.

Plumbers Plumbing Tip: Locating Leaking Pipes
Thursday, October 26th, 2006 by wwwDo you need to find a plumber or plumbing contractor in Los Angeles CA California?
If you receive an unusually high water bill, then there is a possibility that your pipes are leaking. In order to determine whether you have a leaking pipe, the first thing you need to do is to ensure that all the taps and faucets in your house are turned off. Once this is done, examine the water meter and see if it is still running. If the meter is still running, then it is confirmed that there is a leak somewhere.
Small leaks are sometimes hard to find, as they are not so obvious. To locate where the leak is, look for any of the following tell tale signs:
• water stains on the wall or ceiling
• patches or puffiness on the paintwork
• the sound of dripping water
• unusually wet tiles (for tiled surfaces)
