Gear for backpacking trips

Friday, August 31st, 2007 by www

Backpacking gear has all sorts of gadgets and equipment. Choosing the best type of gear for your expedition depends on your personal needs and the type of trip you’re planning for. The basics are shelter, sleeping bags, survival equipment, and of course, your backpack. If you’re a musician… there are a few musical instruments that you can pack, like the ocarina. The ocarina is a small flute that many outdoors people have come to treasure on their expeditions. Here is a glance some of the basic backpacking gear you’ll want to remember.

Backpacking sleeping bags vary in comfort and weight. If you’ll be doing your hiking in areas where humidity are a factor, choosing synthetic backpacking sleeping bags is a must. Polarguard 3D can be an excellent choice of backpacking gear, as the material compresses better than other materials and is also softer and lighter than other fabrics on the market. Goose down can be a fine choice, but you’ll have to watch out to not get your sleeping bag wet, as the down will lose its insulation factor rapidly.

Backpacking gear should include a tarp or two. Waterproof backpacking tarps can be tied to trees with rope and used as a shelter. You’ll avoid carrying poles and the heavier weight of some four-season tents as well. For an ultra light backpacking trip, you’re better off choosing a bivy sack as a shelter and leaving the backpacking tarps at home. Keep in mind that while being lightweight backpacking gear, bivy sacks are also cramped and some people don’t enjoy using them for sleeping shelters.

Your backpacking gear budget should include safety equipment and basic survival tools. Some backpacking tour guides are well prepared to deal with situations gone wrong, but if you’re heading out on your own, having survival gear is critical. It’s best to carry your own emergency equipment even when going on a backpacking tour, just in case of accident. Better safe than sorry.

Television Required

Friday, August 31st, 2007 by www

Television has not always been a required appliance in everyone’s household. As a matter of fact, the television has not even existed for 100 years. Yet, many people believe that having at least one television in their house is necessary.

Some people I know truly believe it is a requirement of life. An acquaintance of mine was once telling me how frustrated he was that he could not find the time to start his own business. From many conversations with him I knew that he did have an idea of a business strategy and that he had agonized over this for a long time. I told him to take baby steps, to just go ahead and incorporate his business and start asking around to get his first consulting client. As we sat there in front of his television, he told me he didn’t have the two hundred dollars to incorporate. Yet I knew from previous conversations that he was paying over a hundred dollars a month for cable television programming. And I knew since he was single with no children and very rarely went out with friends that he was watching over five hours of television a day.

So I told him to drop cable for a couple of months and that would give him an extra two hundred dollars and an extra three hundred hours to work on his business. And if he really worked hard at building his business that he would not only need that extra time but would end up not even missing television at all. He got quite upset with me and indicated that in his opinion, not having digital HDTV television programming was the equivalent of living in a cave. Five years later, he will talk to me every other month or so and still expresses his frustration at not having the time or money to start his consulting business. But he can tell me what shows he watched on television last night.

Is television a requirement in your home?

Healthy Lifestyle – Manage Your Stress

Friday, August 31st, 2007 by www

Constant high stress levels are not conducive to a healthy lifestyle. If you want to live to a ripe old age then you must do something to relieve the problem.

Now many people work much better under stress assuming that the stressor is related to the work you are doing. So, for example:
If you have a deadline to meet for getting a piece of work done and that deadline is close, your stress levels will increase as you rush to complete the job. Usually your output will increase because you can make decisions quicker and are less prone to deliberating about what to do next. You just think it through and do it. We certainly tend to be more motivated when under this type of stress.

So take a break and grab a coffee and sit and calmly work through all that has to be done. Break it into manageable chunks, do not go into the detail at this stage. Just draw the main tasks as boxes and show them in order with lines between them.

Now review what has to be done and in what order and assess whether it can be done or not. Can someone else help? Can you delegate some of the work?

Come up with a realistic plan. If it has a bad news ending then let people know ASAP. Discuss it with those involved, ask for suggestions, you will find that this in it’s self is a great way to reduce your stress levels because you are sharing the problem.

How To Choose A Safety Box Cutter

Thursday, August 30th, 2007 by www

When you think of the basic tools you could have in your tool box; hammer, screwdriver, pliers, etc., you might not think of including the ordinary box cutter. However, this is a must tool to have. From opening the obvious box to freeing your kid’s toy from every parent’s arch nemesis, the plastic claim shell package, the box cutter has found hundred of uses on the job and in every room of the house.

When you think of a box cutter, what may come to mind is a single sided razor blade that is held securely by an inexpensive metal holder. Although this type of cutter is readily available, it may not be your best choice to buy and use.

Manufacturers of cutters realize today that safety is the number one concern of users. They have responded by designing various ways to keep the benefits of using a cutter but minimally expose the user to the cutter’s blade. In essence, a safety cutter. So how do you keep the benefits of a cutter and take away the safety issue? Turn to cutters that have the feature of an automatically retractable blade.

When using a safety cutter with an automatically retractable blade, the cutter itself ensures the blade returns to its protective sheath when the user completes their cut. This allows the user to perform their cutting task and then place the cutter down on their working surface or into their pocket without the danger of being cut by an exposed blade.

If your cutting requirements include cutting packaging tape, boxes, bags, twine, toy packaging, etc, then you can use a safety cutter designed for light or medium duty use. These cutters are generally less expensive than heavy duty cutters and are smaller and less weight. This is a big plus when you are cutting materials for long periods of time and hand fatigue turns into repetitive motion hand pain at the end of the day.

Business Tips – Protect Your Business Ideas With A Patent Lawyer

Thursday, August 30th, 2007 by www

The excerpt below is from a series of articles on patent registration process …

An inventor needs a patent, composers and writers needs a copyright and a company needs a trademark. This is basically what a patent attorney does – provide intellectual property owners with their legal needs.

Patent lawyers are adept in preparing and filing a patent application via the USPTO (U.S. Patent and Trademark Office). This sector normally considers patent agents as good as patent lawyers, as long as they are officially registered.

Since the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit is an ordinary legitimate forum used to report patent infringement, patent attorneys may also select to impose copyright, trademark, or patent laws in a federal court or state. A plaintiff may accept restrictive relief or financial damages from an individual who made use of a copyright, trademark, or patent in an illegal fashion, by going to any court aside from the Court of Appeals.

There are several resources available to help you search for the right patent agent or attorney, such as trade associations, the Internet, as well as district legal organizations. However, a great starting point for any patent research is the USPTO website. The web site makes available a master list of attorneys and agents licensed to carry out their practices before the office.

More so, a patent attorney should of course have a law background and shall be acknowledged to the bar in single or more legal authorities. Currently, the U.S. has a dual system for patent attorneys and agents. There are roughly 22,600 active patent lawyers and 7,200 active agents registered to exercise legal professions before the USPTO office, thus inventors have a wide range of both kinds of patent practitioners to choose from. One of the main things that an inventor should remember when choosing either a patent attorney or patent agent is to pick one with enough experience in the area of inventions. As a general rule, a patent attorney will normally charge more for their services than a patent agent, due to the attorney’s broader educational background in the field.

Someone with experience in the field of inventions will generally be more competent and able to create a more effective patent application. There are various ways to select a patent attorney. One way is to source referrals from individuals who do business with inventors and other inventors themselves. Another helpful method in searching for a patent attorney is to browse the database of registered practitioners created by the USPTO. Ideally, it is recommended that you begin your search in your local area, as you will probably want to meet personally with a potential patent attorney after your initial telephone calls …
